This montage of images shows the asteroid (400811) Gillesfontaine, named in honour of astrophysicist Gilles Fontaine, professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Montreal, who passed away in 2019. The colour image was taken with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), the instrument that discovered the asteroid, in 2010. This colour image actually shows three asteroids, that is, the three series of aligned red dots, which correspond to the movement of the asteroids relative to the starry background. These are asteroids (31275) 1998 FN25, on the left of the image, (400811) Gillesfontaine, in the middle, and (53364) 1999 JL77, on the right. WISE is a joint project of the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)/Caltech, funded by NASA. The black and white image was taken with the PESTO instrument at OMM in May of 2021. A segment of the trajectory of asteroid Gillesfontaine is indicated by the arrow.
