Astromatic 2022

About Astromatic

Astromatic 2022 was the first edition of a week-long undergrad hackathon combining machine learning and astrophysics. 15 outstanding undergraduate students from 8 different countries converged in Montréal for three days of expert lectures on foundational topics and research, programming workshops and career activities. The summer school was followed by a hackathon that fostered teamwork and creativity through the development of a powerful project at the intersection of astrophysics and machine learning.

During the program, the participants had the opportunity to participate in workshops, science talks, career seminars, programming sessions, and other activities related to the core thematic area of machine learning, scientific computing, and astrophysics. A number of social events were also organized to foster team building and networking. The program concluded with showcasing each of the projects, and an award presentation for the most outstanding works.

The airfare and accommodation costs were covered by the organizers.

What the participants had to say

"Astromatic is by far the best hackathon I've been to! In just one week, I learned a lot about the intersection between astrophysics and ML through a variety of lectures and workshops from world leading experts. I completed a self-contained project in a team and developed many new skills which I will apply to future projects. In addition, I got to explore the historic city of Montréal with an amazing group of students from all around the world. Without a doubt, Astromatic is an amazing program which has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to broaden my horizons in astrophysics and ML. I would definitely recommend Astromatic!" - Matthew Leung, University of Toronto

"My experience at Astromatic was truly unforgettable! I learned so much about Astrophysics and AI in a short span of a week, while also exploring the beautiful city of Montrèal. The program truly exceeded my expectations as I met some of the most interesting people and learned about the intersection of AI/ML and Astrophysics, the entire organization team and professors involved made us feel very welcomed and also struck a great balance of learning and exploration. The lectures taught were thought-provoking and informative and is something that I will carry with me as I pursue further career aspirations. I want to thank the entire team for such an amazing experience." - Syeda Tabassum, Brooklyn College
