Numerical simulation of convective flows

Color rendering of the vertical flow velocity in a global magnetohydrodynamical simulation of solar convection. Rising fluid is in yellow-white, and sinking fluid in blue-black. The structuring of the convective flow as broad cells of hot, upwelling fluid surrounded by narrow downflows of cold fluid is typical of thermal convection in an environment stratified by gravity. The numerical scheme used here can capture these flow structures down to the scale of the computational cells, delineated here by the black gridlines.
