ASTR-7500: Animations, Section IV.5.3

Mean-field dynamos with solar-like differential rotation

The following two animations are two alpha-omega solutions with solar-like isorotation contours, discussed in Part IV, Section 5.3 of the class notes.

The axisymmetric dynamo solutions are shown in a full meridional quadrant. The color scales codes the toroidal magnetic field strength, normalized to the interval [-1,1]. Yellow-Red is positive toroidal field (pointing into the screen), and Green-Blue negative toroidal field. The contour lines are poloidal fieldlines. Blue fieldlines are clockwise-oriented, and orange fieldlines counterclockwise. The animations cover one full phase of the linear eigensolution, with the phase indicated in yellow at the bottom of the image (the zero point of the phase is arbitrary). Dynamo numbers and the mode eigenvalue (in units of the inverse diffusion time) are listed on top of the image.

The following animation is for a negative dynamo number C_alpha (see eqs. IV.5.7). The solution are very close to critical (Re(s)=0). See also Figures IV.5.5, through IV.5.9 in the class notes.
